2014 Annual Report (PDF Version)

Dear Friends,

It is with great pride that I write the fifth annual report for Troop 160 Memorial Scout Camp. Our organization has come a long way in just four and a half years. During 2014, our Board of Directors fine-tuned our existing programs and established the MSC Camping Essentials Program. The result was a well-rounded program that will help to strengthen the organization’s purpose for many years to come.

The following are some of the highlights and accomplishments from 2014.
  • The MSC Trading Post has continued to be the primary source of income for the organization. It has generated the capital necessary to fund the organization’s day-to-day operations, as well as, making many major improvements at the Memorial Scout Camp possible.
  • In February, we purchased $220 worth of playground toys to be donated to the United Nations Refugee Agency. This effort was made in conjunction with the International Scout and Guide Fellowship’s “Fellowship Toy” program.
  • In April, $900 in camperships were awarded through the MSC Campership Program:
    • The Adam Beggs Campership was awarded to Ian McNaughton, Troop 606, Farmingdale, ME
    • The Craig Goodwin Campership was awarded to Sebastian Paradise, Troop 497, Jackman, ME
    • The Joe Beggs Campership was awarded to Alexandre Michaud, Troop 110, Sabattus, ME
  • In May, the Facilities Committee held their second annual Spring Work Weekend at the Memorial Scout Camp at Spectacle Pond. Many improvement projects were completed, including the following:
    • The Joe Beggs Waterfront was established, which included the installation of a 20 foot aluminum docking system.
    • A full length deck was added to the front of Adam’s Cabin
  • We had a very busy year at the Memorial Scout Camp at Spectacle pond.  The camp was occupied for 40 days.  It was used by 5 BSA scout troops, 3 scout families, and 2 private parties.
  • On August 9, Troop 160 Memorial Scout Camp collaborated with the City of Auburn in sponsoring the second annual MSC CITO, which was a citywide cleanup effort. The 13 participants came from across the State of Maine...Bangor, Brewer, Waterville, Saco, Lisbon, Lewiston, and Auburn.  Together, they collected approximately two tons of trash and illicitly dumped junk from public lands located across the city.
  • In October, we purchased and donated 4 pair of LL Bean hiking boots through the MSC Camping Essentials Program. The following scouts were recipients.
    • Anthony Kelley, Troop 814, Everett, MA
    • Nicholas Medieros, Troop 814, Everett, MA
    • Ray Chabot, Troop 814, Everett, MA
    • Ian Ferguson, Troop 609, Windsor, ME
  • In November, Troop 160 Memorial Scout Camp sponsored the third annual Scouts Against Hunger project to benefit St. Martin DePorres Homeless Shelter in Lewiston, ME.
    • On Sunday, November 2, 15 volunteers went door to door distributing 1500 flyers and plastic grocery bags in the SNOW.
    • On Sunday, November 9, 13 volunteers collected over 300 bags of food that were left out on people's porches.
    • In addition to the food donation, the Board of Directors of Troop 160 Memorial Scout Camp authorized the purchase and donation of a case of paper napkins, 2 cases of paper towels, and 134 assorted, personal size toiletries.
During 2014, the Corporation received income of $13,099. The expenses of the Corporation totaled $13,649. On December 31, 2014, the net value of the Corporation’s cash assets was $7,789. The estimated fair market value of the Corporation’s physical assets is $78,800. The total value of the Corporation is estimated at $86,589.

In closing, I would like to thank the Board of Directors, our volunteers, and contributors for their support during 2014. Together, we have continued to build and improve our organization, making Troop 160 Memorial Scout Camp a widely recognized independent scouting organization dedicated to…Promoting Wilderness Camping - Supporting Worldwide Scouting - Sponsoring Community Service.
